As crime surges across California and police departments face critical staffing shortages, Democrat politicians in Sacramento are pushing a dangerous new bill that would make it a crime for federal law enforcement agents to protect their identities — effectively aiding radical activists in their efforts to harass, intimidate, and dox officers working to keep our communities safe.
Assemblyman Carl DeMaio is sounding the alarm on Senate Bill 627, authored by far-left State Senator Scott Wiener (D–San Francisco), which would make it a misdemeanor for any law enforcement officer to wear a face covering while on duty.
“This is insane and offensive,” said DeMaio. “California Democrats want to criminalize federal agents for doing their jobs — and help their militant base dox and target them.”
SB 627 would apply to federal, state, and local officers, stripping them of the ability to protect their identities during operations that often put them in direct conflict with violent criminals and extremist agitators.
“What Democrats are doing here is giving violent activists a green light to stalk and attack the very people trying to enforce the law,” said DeMaio. “It’s disgraceful.”
DeMaio pointed to recent incidents where radical left-wing accounts — like the now-deactivated “LA Scanner” on X (formerly Twitter) — were tracking and posting the locations of federal ICE agents, even identifying the hotels where they were staying during operations.
“Agents were followed, harassed, and in some cases had their tires slashed and personal threats made,” DeMaio said. “This wasn’t speculation — it happened.”
In one shocking case, the man behind the LA Scanner account was later exposed as a convicted felon prohibited from operating a police scanner. Yet Democrats now want to empower more people like him by stripping law enforcement of anonymity protections and making it easier to publicly expose agents’ personal details.
“These activists demand anonymity for themselves, but want to strip it from the brave men and women of law enforcement,” DeMaio said. “The hypocrisy is stunning.”
Senator Scott Wiener has repeatedly defended SB 627 under the guise of “transparency,” but DeMaio is calling it what it is: a calculated attack on public safety designed to score political points with the far-left base.
“This bill is not about transparency — it’s about intimidation,” said DeMaio. “If a law enforcement officer can’t shield their identity from violent extremists, then you are effectively telling them to quit the job. And that’s exactly what Democrats want.”
DeMaio warned that SB 627 will exacerbate California’s already devastating recruitment and retention crisis in law enforcement and put frontline officers — and their families — in danger.
“If this bill passes, federal agents from ICE, the FBI, and Homeland Security may not comply — but local and state officers will be subject to this insane policy,” DeMaio explained. “Democrats know this. They are intentionally trying to demoralize and endanger law enforcement at all levels.”
DeMaio also called out the media’s refusal to investigate or report the true consequences of SB 627, and vowed that Reform California will lead the fight to block it.
“Reform California is making SB 627 a key vote in battleground districts — and we will make sure every voter knows who sided with law enforcement and who sided with the doxers,” said DeMaio.

“This bill is an attack on public safety, plain and simple,” DeMaio said. “And it shows you just how far California Democrats are willing to go to undermine law enforcement, embolden criminals, and reward radical activists.”
“Senator Wiener needs to resign. And Governor Gavin Newsom must be held accountable for standing by while these dangerous policies are pushed through the legislature.”
