Carl DeMaio to amend CA Voter ID Initiative to include a privacy mandate to protect voters from intimidation
Last week, Reform California received hundreds of complaints from California voters who said they received mailers from their county election office that revealed their party registration – printed in bold print on the outside of the mailer for all to see!
The mailers were directed to be sent out by California’s Democrat politicians. You can see a photo of one of the mailers below:
“This privacy breach is outrageous and it's inexcusable for government officials to reveal in a public way the party registration of a voter — voters should not face intimidation or shame because of the party they have registered to,” said Carl DeMaio, chairman of Reform California and author of the California Voter ID Initiative.
DeMaio lays out at least three reasons why the mailer is shocking and includes deceptive reasoning by politicians for finding its way into your mailbox:
PRIVACY BREACH: The mailers include the name of the voter and the party the voter is registered to on the outside of the mail piece. In the history of election mailers, someone’s party registration has never been publicly revealed on the outside of a mailer — ever;
PUSH TO "SWITCH YOUR PARTY" INCLUDED: Inside the mailer, the county election office explains that voters who want to vote for a presidential candidate face different rules based on which political party they are registered to and encourages voters to switch parties if they want to participate in a nominating contest;
RISK OF CANCEL CULTURE: In an era of cancel culture — with the media and Democrat politicians falsely accusing Republicans of being white supremacists, extremists, racists, etc. — the move raises concerns that voters may feel intimidated if their postal rep or neighbor sees their party registration status.
DeMaio says that the politicians’ stated reason for sending the mailers is bogus, because voters have same-day registration rights in California elections. Despite the mailers being unnecessary, the breach of privacy is inexcusable and a clear attempt at intimidation.
That's why DeMaio is proposing a "Voter Right-to-Privacy" Mandate. To prevent this outrageous privacy breach from happening again, Carl DeMaio is announcing he will amend his California Voter ID Initiative to include a new mandate protecting privacy rights of voters. DeMaio has instructed campaign attorneys to present the language for a refiling of the initiative in 2024.
“No voter should ever have their party information printed on the outside of any election mail – whether it is an informational notice or their official ballot,” declared DeMaio.
