California’s tax-and-spend politicians have always dreamed of repealing Prop 13 – the landmark taxpayer protection initiative enacted in 1978 that limits the ability of politicians to raise your taxes. In 2024 the politicians are once again trying to gut Prop 13 to raise your taxes through the deceptive Prop 5 ballot measure on your ballot.
Prop 5 lowers the public vote threshold for approving ad valorem tax hikes from two-thirds currently required to just 55%. Prop 5 would make it easier to raise taxes – and that’s why Reform California strongly opposes it and urges a NO vote on the measure.
“Californians face a cost-of-living crisis and yet state and local politicians still want to raise our taxes and add to the financial struggles of working families,” says Carl DeMaio, Chairman of Reform California.
“To protect Prop 13 and shield taxpayers from costly and unfair tax hikes they simply cannot afford, we must defeat Prop 5,” DeMaio warns.
DeMaio warns voters that state politicians have put a deceptive title on Prop 5 in an attempt to trick voters into approving the tax-hike measure.
Politicians’ Deceptive Title on Ballot: Prop 5: Allows Local Bonds for Affordable Housing and Public Infrastructure with 55% Voter Approval. Legislative Constitutional Amendment.
Reform California’s “Plain English” Title: Prop 5: Guts Prop 13 and Makes it Easier to Raise Taxes by Lowering Vote Required on Ad-Valorem Taxes from Two-Thirds to 55%
DeMaio is urging taxpayers to help the campaign to defeat Prop 5 by chipping in a contribution of any amount – and by sharing the Reform California “Plain English” Voter Guide with friends and family when ballots arrive.
